No. 90 – The Coalition

Newsletter of the South Shore Coalition of Independent Therapists

Hello SSCIT members,
So, many changes are happening.  We are wrestling to organically understand billing code changes.  We are worried about short term impact of policies in government that dictate trends in insurance reimbursement.  We are making decisions about how to form (or re-form) our practices in anticipation of any such changes.  It just won’t stop.
As an optimist (which, in this climate, can be a “disorder”), I take steps back and view the trends from a bird’s eye view.  When I don’t get too swept up in the swirls, I find my creativity popping.  I’ve collaborated with other clinicians to discover alternate ways to bypass the need to utilize insurance.  I have begun collaborating with clients and peers to rework diagnostic formulations in my treatment plans to re-invigorate the work. These are just two examples of how folks can reclaim a sense of feeling grounded in the confusing upheaval.  I can’t stress enough how vital it is in this climate to cling to and collaborate with our colleagues.  We are our own greatest resource!  Feeling better yet?
My personal commitment to the Coalition this year is to revamp how our tools work.  There are snags in our website.  Our printed directory was severely delayed due to errors – they should be distributed in February.  I would also like to streamline a more universal communication tool so that everyone is updated on information and is aware of what must be communicated to me and our board members about everything from updated practice info to mailing list accuracy.  Please don’t feel like you are bothering me (or the board) by sending us your ideas to address any and all of these issues.
Since our last newsletter, two speakers have dazzled us at luncheons.  Jillian Scribi brought us up to speed on trends and treatment considerations for Couple’s Therapy.  Jim Bailey pulled us out of the 90’s to refresh our sense of effective treatment for Sexual Addictions.  Between the content of each talk and the networking and discussions that were provoked, I express to them my fierce gratitude for demonstrating how our group is cohesive, current and intelligent.  BRAVO!
The next newsletter will be sent out in early April. All announcements must be received by March 27, 2013 to be included. You can send them to me by e-mail: [email protected] (kindly do not send them to me via the email listserv) or they can be mailed to me at 41 Popple Bottom Road, Sandwich, MA 02563.

Sincerely,
Kenneth Freedman, LICSW
President, SSCIT
